Benjamin H. Mathews Jr.

Benjamin Hebron Mathews, Jr, the son of the late Margaret L. Walker and Benjamin Hebron Mathews, Sr. and his loving and devoted stepfather Dubois N. Walker. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 7, 1946. He was the eldest of seven children: Samuel Mathews, William Mathews and Laleta Ball preceded him in death and his three surviving sisters are Margaret Oliver, Mary Walker and Annie Walker-Bradley.

Benjamin was educated in the Baltimore City Public Schools. He joined the United States Army shortly after leaving high school. He served 18 and one half years, obtaining the rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7) before retiring.

From his first marriage to Bessie J. Mathews (Allen) he was blessed with four children; Constance L. Smith, Margaret M. Mathews, Benjamin E. Mathews, Christine E. Griffin (Melvin). From his second marriage to Barbara D. Mathews (Senior) he was blessed with three stepchildren; Datonia Muhammad (Mark), Darian Senior (Claudette) and Kevin Senior (Tammy).

He loved his family and friends and enjoyed their company. He loved playing Pinochle. He enjoyed participating in, hosting and organizing events, such as the Lockley-Hayes Crab Feast and the Fella’s celebrations each year. He loved to cook, grill and entertain people. He made a wicked macaroni and cheese. He was a loyal, trusting and very caring soul and would give anyone the shirt off his back. Once he retired from the military, he became a member of the Fella’s Organization and The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA).

He leaves to mourn a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, twenty-four grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, several very special friends; John Smallwood, Jessie Jones, Joyce and Stoney Carroll, Bernard and Carol Watson, Linda and Joe Carethers.
